The iPad 4 is now back on sale in the Apple store.
Today’s big Apple news taking the tech world by storm is the release of the 8GB iPhone 5C, on sale in Europe. It means that many more customers will now be able to buy an iPhone, and might start to increase sales of the iPhone 5C. However, something that hasn’t had as much publicity is Apple’s quiet reshuffle of its iPad line. The three-year-old iPad 2 has finally been discontinued and the iPad 4 seems to have come out of retirement and is back on sale.
Back when Apple released the iPad Air and the iPad mini with Retina, it killed off the iPad 4, but still left the iPad 2 on sale as a lower-cost option. It didn’t make much sense though: the iPad 2 cost the same as the iPad mini with Retina, so would many fans really be willing to give up the Retina screen and the up-to-date technology for the extra 1.8 inch of display?
However, getting the iPad 4 (just called the iPad with Retina on Apple’s site) for the same price as the iPad mini Retina seems like a much better deal. You’ll get the bigger screen size, the Retina display and pretty new technology from just $399. The iPad mini with Retina is still obviously a better tablet – it’s powered by that A7 64-bit processor and M7 coprocessor – and you can only get the iPad 4 in a 16GB variant, but it’s still definitely a good option for those who want a full-sized slate.
It’s a shame that Apple didn’t re-release the iPad 4 with 32GB storage as well – 16GB is only really an option if you’re the only user of your tablet and you’re willing to store a lot to the iCloud. Perhaps this indicates that Apple just has a lot of stock to shift of the iPad 4 16GB model? Whatever the reason, look on this as an opportunity to get yourself a great deal.
